Nowhereville (Prologue)

Some time ago, just before she left for good, we we’re lying in bed, me and her, her and me. I think we might have been listening to those mad pigeons scrambling in the roof again, doing that crazy dance they did, but I can’t be sure anymore. What I do remember is telling her what I wanted to do, how I wanted to capture memories of the world, how I wanted to create something some might possibly find ‘beautiful’. I don’t think I made myself very clear though, incoherently rambling on like I tend to do, I think she thought I was simply being morbid. Anyway.

What I’m trying to get at in a ever so labored way is that this coming summer I’m going to attempt this feat, this impossible, utterly subjective attempt at capturing something a certain few might construe as being ‘beautiful’. I’m going to travel far and wide in search of decaying memories, which is of course intangible by their very nature, but what I’m hoping to do is to give them substance in the form of all those sad and lost places alongside the road. Abandoned houses, crumbling cinemas, empty stations and railway lines, signs of places and lives that where once very tangible indeed. Through these ‘signs’, these places, I hope to give them some form of ‘memory’ again, where it might have completely vanished in time, or is very close to being utterly lost. My latest series ‘Nowhereville’ will be the inspiration for this attempt, because while I think it’s a reasonably good start, it certainly needs some elaboration and possibly a somewhat larger scope, which these travels will hopefully provide.

My plan of action is to fund this leap of faith by means of a crowd funding platform, because, well, unfortunately I’m rather poor and searching for ‘decaying memories’ needs train tickets, film (yep, going full on analog on this one), printing costs, framing, publishing etc, because at the end of the trip I’m planning on self publishing a photo book, and also I’m going to arrange an exhibition or two – which, being an unknown and all will most probably also have to be self financed, hence the printing and framing costs. My supporters will then receive printed frames of their choice, and also a copy of the book as a big ‘thank you’ as I would really like to make them a part of this whole experience, because, I mean, at the end of the day it’s universal memories, not so?

In the coming days and weeks I’ll be sharing more of my intended itinerary, the proper project statement/link, a new portfolio, latest ideas, a possible collaboration I’ve got planned, developments, and so forth. So then, thanks for listening, and if anyone has any thoughts or advice on the matter please give me a shout, it would really be much appreciated as this whole venture is very much new territory for me, and while exciting, it’s also ever so slightly intimidating. If you like, you can also send me your Twitter handle for updates along the way.

Last but not least, I would like to thank a few people for all the superb encouragement they’ve been offering over the months, Marina over at http://marinachetner.com/ , seriously, without her continued support and kick ass attitude I don’t think (know) I would have taken this bold leap. Thanks, Marina. Also, Adrian over at http://eccentric99.wordpress.com for his much needed friendship and enthusiasm, you know I appreciate it, man. And then of course there’s Florian at http://www.hobokollektiv.net/ for those tunes he loves so much, his shared outlook, his inspiration, thanks, brother.

  1. JP – a heartfelt post and excellent images – the last, with the crack down the middle, would be quite heartbreaking were it not for the window reflection 🙂 I’m going to support you all the way and thank you for the thanks – I don’t really feel deserving though. Your undertaking is one that speaks to your passion and motivation. Anything you need help with, just let me know. Looking forward to learning more about your plans.

    • Cheers for commenting on the reflection, Marina, as it was a big conundrum for me – seeing that a crop would have seriously altered the intended dynamic of the shot, glad that I went with it though.

You’ve already done so much, but thanks, I know I can count on you for your continued support, and you will be the first one to hear of any new developments – hopefully you will also be able to reign me in a bit as I sometimes, well, get a bit overexcited, and possibly don’t always think things through. But you should know that by now, LOL.

    • Wow, that’s such a excellent way of putting it, let’s just hope that it will be enough! You know, ‘Kickstarter’ was my platform of choice, that is until I read the fine print and realized that it’s only open to American citizens, but luckily I managed to find another one. Thanks for the project link, I really appreciate that as I’m such a novice when it comes to the whole thing, so any ideas I can find will go a long way towards realizing this project.

      Thanks, Sally.

Wish you the best of luck on this, JP. If I weren’t currently seeking to fund my own much-needed adventure, I’d be glad to donate. I think that the undeniable impact of your photography will draw peoples interest, and the passion and solid direction you have for the project will take care of the rest. Looking forward to seeing where this leads you, and what sort of work will come of it. Hope all’s well.

    • Ah, thanks man, that’s so very kind of you. Yeah, I hope I can make a success of this one as it feels so right, so close to my heart, the one I have such a passion for, I just hope that passion will be enough to carry me through! It’s fantastic to hear that you’ve got one going yourself, and I’m sure it’s something rather brilliant, I mean how can it not be? You have inspiration, innovation and originality by the bucket load, and then some to spare, so yeah, I would love to hear what the project’s all about. Good luck with that, James.

      Cheers,
      JP

Well, thank goodness I caught the prologue! I see that I already follow you on Twitter. I just forget to post or look at it. When you run out of lunch money, give me a holler. I’m a real sucker for a talented starving artist! 😉 Carry along a copy of Dorothea Lange photographs. You can’t improve on her work…no matter the talent in your jeans pocket.

    • Yes, that’s so typically me, doing everything in a (ever so) slightly topsy turvy way, the (potential) first part of the series, and then the prologue? What’s up with that? Oh well, what can I say…That’s so cool, thanks so much for the offer to help out! Hopefully I’ll be going online with this project next week sometime – which I’m honestly quite nervous about – and then we’ll see how it goes. Ah yes, Dorothea Lange’s migrant mother series, yes, I completely agree, the amount of honesty and pure emotion in her work is something I can only ever aspire to, but how she inspires to aspire!

      Cheers, and thanks again.

  8. Full analogue decay & lonesomeness are just what I’m longing for, brother. I don’t know how I can help but be sure once I figure out a way, you’ll hear first & get my support, JP.

Prologue: I closed the door slighty & found myself surrounded by complete darkness. Just a light at the dark end of street told me that it was time to make change. The time for chasing the fleeting moments & the places once so full of life now nearly forgotten. Never kept a dollar past sunset always a hole in my jeans & camera at hand.

I know the road you’re supposed to travel damn well & I’ll be there when you start roaming. Right behind, at your side & always …

All the best & safe travels, Fritsch.

  18. Wow, JP, this quite a manifesto!!! Well, first things first – thank you for the plug – and if my words have spurred you on and/or made you feel better, then I’m very glad! That’s one of the things that life is all about! And if you let me know a way of getting funding to you then I’ll certainly chip in – it may not be much but it’ll certainly be something!

I admire you for doing this – I don’t think I’d have the courage or commitment to do it myself >>> but I wish you all the luck and, as always, I’ll always provide enthusiasm >>> and if you do a book, I’ll certainly want a copy! And you’re going to use film – good man!

I like the three photos here. I think that for me the top two are the best – powerful, atmospheric stuff! But, having said that, I like the bottle left on the pavement table – it tells of someone unknown, who has moved on >>> I’ve thought very similar things about vacated cafe tables here in the UK.

So, good luck, my friend! – and I’m always at the end of the email/blog – though as with this week, I’ve taken quite a time to go through the emails! Good journey! Adrian

    • Ha ha, I suppose it is! And believe me I tried to keep it as short as possible, but alas, it still goes on and on, LOL. Yes, this is a crazy ride that I’ve let myself in for, and yes the self doubt and insecurity does sometimes creep in, but in the end I need to make a proper go of this, otherwise, well, this “affair” will haunt me to the end of days.

I had all my days with that last one, I just really loved that shot but it refused to work with my initial crop (without the reflection) but after altering it by including the reflection it kinda works on a certain level (well, in my humble opinion that is).

Thanks so much for the encouraging words, man. And it means so much to hear that you’re ‘on board’ with this little project of mine. Oh, and yes, of course you will receive a copy! I mean, we’ve travelled some way together, not so?

      All the best, Adrian.
